Warts & Molluscum

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters through tiny breaks in the skin and leads to the growth of rough, bumpy lesions. They’re most common on the hands, feet, and face. Molluscum contagiosum is another skin condition caused by a different virus and presents as small, dome-shaped bumps.

How Are Warts Spread:

HPV is very contagious and spreads through:

  • Direct skin contact
  • Shared items (e.g., towels, nail clippers)
  • Walking barefoot in public showers or locker rooms

Types of Warts:

Common warts: Often appear on the hands, especially near nails

Plantar warts: Found on the soles of the feet, often painful due to pressure

Genital warts: Sexually transmitted and linked to cervical and other cancers

Treatment Options:

  • OTC salicylic acid products (use with caution to avoid irritating healthy skin)
  • Cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen)
  • Electrosurgery or curettage (burning or scraping off the wart)
  • Immunotherapy, bleomycin injections, or Cantharone for stubborn warts
  • HPV vaccines (Cervarix®, Gardasil®) for prevention, especially in preteens

Preventive Tips:

  • Don’t walk barefoot in communal areas
  • Avoid picking at warts
  • Use separate grooming tools for infected areas
