Hives (Urticaria)

Hives are itchy, red, raised welts on the skin. They may appear suddenly and often move from one area of the body to another.

Causes:

  • Allergic reactions (e.g., food, medication, insect stings)
  • Infections
  • Stress
  • Environmental triggers (cold, heat, pressure)
  • In about 50% of cases, no cause is identified

Hives Treatments:

  • Antihistamines to reduce itching and swelling
  • Topical treatments for localized relief
  • Avoid known triggers, if identified

Hives are usually short-lived but can recur over days or weeks. Chronic hives lasting longer than six weeks should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
