Folliculitis
Folliculitis is inflammation or infection of one or more hair follicles. It appears as red pimples, pustules, or a rash near hair-bearing areas—commonly the neck, groin, or beard. It often results from friction (like tight clothing), shaving, or blocked follicles. Bacterial infection, especially by Staphylococcus aureus, is a common cause.
There Are 2 Main Types:
- Superficial Folliculitis
- Affects the upper part of the follicle
- Symptoms: small red bumps, white-headed pimples, crusting, itchiness, or tenderness
- Beard-related version is called Barber’s Itch
- Fungal version is called Tinea Barbae (ringworm of the beard)
- Deep Folliculitis
- Involves the entire hair follicle and may lead to larger, more painful lesions
- More often seen in individuals with chronic skin conditions, on long-term antibiotics, or with suppressed immune systems

Treatments May Include:
- Topical or oral antibiotics
- Antifungal medications for fungal causes
- Topical creams to reduce inflammation
- Eliminating the trigger (e.g., changing shaving habits or clothing)
